Shockers fly away in seventh inning for series win, Myers hits first-career home run

HOUSTON – A four-run seventh inning for the visiting Wichita State Shockers downed the Houston softball team 7-3 on Friday night at Cougar Softball Stadium.

The Cougars (23-18-1, 7-3-1 American) tied the game on third baseman Baylea Myers' first-career home run in the fourth and held the Shockers scoreless in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but gave up three hits, including a two-run home run in the seventh.

Wichita State (23-13, 6-2 American) again jumped out to an early lead, homering on the first pitch of the game. A four-hit first inning added another run to give the Shockers a two-run lead early.

Each team scored once in the third inning. Houston utilized a leadoff double by Myers and consecutive singles by right fielder Paige Hulsey and left fielder Amanda Carden to score its first run of the game.

The Cougars brought the energy in the middle innings from the bottom of the order.

Myers sent the Cougar dugout into a frenzy in the fourth inning, lining her first career home run just over the centerfield wall, tying the game at three.

Then, Hulsey laid out for a highlight reel catch in the fifth inning to rob a hit.

Wichita State scored the go-ahead run thanks to a lead-off double and subsequent base hit. A walk and a sacrifice bunt put a pair in scoring position for the Shockers to plate one on a sacrifice fly. A two-run home run by shortstop Sydney McKinney, her second of the game, gave WSU a four-run lead.

Houston ended the game with a pair of baserunners on and the tying run on deck.

Houston will look to salvage the series finale against Wichita State at noon Saturday as the program wraps its 75^th Anniversary Alumni Weekend at Cougar Softball Stadium.
