Busch, Wilkey overpower East Carolina, named conference weekly award winners
HOUSTON – Houston softball seniors Bethany Busch and Kenna Wilkey were named The American Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, after overpowering East Carolina in a sweep this past weekend.
Sweeping the weekly awards marks the first time in program history, since joining The American, that a Houston pitcher and position player had each earned the weekly honors in the same week.
Busch drove in a team-leading seven RBI in her return from injury and clobbered two 3-run home runs in back-to-back games as the Cougars swept East Carolina. The Baytown, Texas native drove in a career-high 4 RBI on Saturday and posted back-to-back multi-RBI games on Saturday and Sunday.
Wilkey helped the Cougars remain unbeaten in eight-straight games by tying a season-high nine strikeouts on Sunday and sending seven Pirate batters back to the dugout via strikeout on Friday. The Braidwood, Ill. native recorded back-to-back complete-game shutouts of the Pirates and struck out 16 in 13.0 IP.
Houston is off to its best start in conference play since 2014, when the Cougars started 11-0 in The American, posting a 7-1-1 record to start the conference slate in 2022. UH has now swept back-to-back series' and is unbeaten in its last eight games.
