Houston wins ninth contest in 10 outings
HOUSTON – For a second consecutive night, Houston Baseball broke through in the eighth inning, this time overtaking Southern as part of a 7-4 victory on Wednesday night from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.
Houston's hottest hitter, Anthony Tulimero (3-for-4), lined a bases-loaded single into right field as the ball skipped away for a two-base error. The play plated three runs and turned a 4-3 Cougar deficit into a 6-4 Houston lead.
The Cougars (9-4), winners in nine of their last 10 games, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning only to see Southern (3-10) starter Khristian Paul retire 16 consecutive batters before Houston broke through in the seventh inning.
In the seventh, Ian McMillan trimmed Houston's deficit to 4-3, roping his first career triple into right center. The two-out, three-bagger scored Tulimero who led off the frame with a double.
In the eighth, Brandon Uhse (single) and Zach Arnold (hit by pitch) reached to lead off the frame, taking second and third on a double steal. Alex Lopez walked to load the bases, setting the stage for Tulimero who would go on to score on a balk.
The Cougars jumped ahead in the first thanks to three hits including consecutive RBI-singles from Tulimero and Cameron Nickens. Tulimero has reached safely in all 13 games. Nickens has an RBI in five consecutive games.
Houston starter Kyle Wright permitted four runs (one earned) on six hits alongside two walks and one strikeout. Kyle LaCalameto (1-0) was dominant in relief, tossing 5.0 hitless innings while striking out eight batters without a walk to earn the win.

Houston opens a four-game road trip against Louisiana at 6 p.m. Friday from M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park. Saturday's first pitch is set for 2 p.m. while Sunday's finale gets underway at 1 o'clock. All three games can be seen on ESPN+ and can be heard on The Varsity Network.
