Busch drives in three, including winning run against #7 Washington
LAS VEGAS – Left fielder Bethany Busch gave the Cougars a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning and then drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth as Houston (7-9) toppled #7 Washington 5-4 on Friday.
Right fielder Amanda Carden singled to move designated player and placed runner Kylee Gibson in the bottom of the eighth to third. On the first pitch of the next at bat, Busch's fly ball to left field was deep enough to score Gibson and deliver the win.
Graduate student Hannah Todd was brilliant in her start, striking out four Husky (12-5) batters and without allowing an earned run in 5.0 innings of work.
The Cougars used four different pitchers in the game, with Kenna Wilkey getting the win after tossing a perfectly clean eighth inning.
Carden gave the Cougars the lead in the third inning with an RBI double to left-center field.
The one-run game held until Washington tied the game in the top of the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the inning, Busch hit her second homer of the season, giving UH the 3-1 lead.
Washington answered with a two-out three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead, which they held onto in the bottom half of the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning down a run with two outs, center fielder Aspen Howie hit the Cougars' second home run of the game in as many innings, tying the game at 4-4.
