Eighth-year Houston coach led Cougars to Elite Eight, 32-6 overall record & two American Athletic Conference championships
HOUSTON – After leading the University of Houston Men's Basketball program to a record-setting 2021-22 season, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson was named the CBS Sports National Coach of the Year on Thursday.
Finishing his eighth season at Houston, Sampson led the 15th-ranked Cougars to a 32-6 overall record and 15-3 mark in American Athletic Conference play. Houston advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the second straight season, making the Cougars only one of two teams to accomplish that feat.
With the Cougars' claiming the 2021-22 American regular-season title, Sampson became the first coach in Houston history to lead the program to three conference crowns in a four-year stretch.
Guiding Houston to three wins in three days at the American Athletic Conference Championship, Sampson's Cougars swept the league's regular-season and tournament titles for only the fourth time in school history and the first time since 1991-92.
Sampson is the only coach in school history to lead the Cougars to seven consecutive 20-wins seasons. With his selection as the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for the third time, he also became the first Cougar coach to receive three conference Coach of the Year honors.
After losing four starters from last year's NCAA Final Four squad, Sampson's 2021-22 team's impressive accomplishments came despite losing Preseason All-American Athletic Conference First-Team guard Marcus Sasser and sophomore guard Tramon Mark to season-ending injuries in December 2021.
That duo combined to score more than 27.0 points per game prior to their injuries.
In 33 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Sampson has compiled a 699-340 overall record with a 199-70 mark at Houston. He is one of only 16 coaches to lead multiple schools to the NCAA Final Four and ranks as the winningest coach in Houston career history with a .740 career winning percentage.
This is the fifth National Coach of the Year Award that Sampson has received during his career. That list includes the 2021 John McLendon Award, 2019 Clarence "Big House" Gaines Award, 2002 National Association of Basketball Coaches and the 1995 Associated Press.
