Houston opens eight-game homestand Friday
HOUSTON – Houston Baseball opens an eight-game homestand at 6:30 p.m. Friday, welcoming Western Carolina for a three-game series as part of Kids Weekend from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park. Saturday's first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. Sunday's finale starts at 1 o'clock.

The Cougars (14-7), winners of three straight and four of their last five, have been surging offensively, logging 10-plus hits in five consecutive games. Houston's 14 victories are tied with South Florida for the most among American Athletic Conference programs.

The Catamounts (10-11) took 2 of 3 last weekend from UT Martin and knocked off Cincinnati and Kansas earlier in the season as part of the 2022 First Pitch Invitational. Western Carolina has averaged 8.3 runs per game, ranking 34th nationally.

Houston and Western Carolina are meeting for the first time in the history of the programs. The Cougars have one previous meeting against a current SoCon opponent, falling to UNC Greensboro, 9-5, at the 1997 NCAA South I Regional in Baton Rouge, La.

Houston's turnaround is evident early in the 2022 season. The Cougars are five wins shy of matching their 2021 total. Houston is batting .272, compared to .239 a season ago, while scoring 6.76 runs per game compared to just 4.32.

Houston outfielder Brandon Uhse is riding a 17-game hit streak and 18-game on-base streak. He leads The American in runs (26) and doubles (11) and is third in RBIs (22).
