Houston goes undefeated at home with fifth consecutive victory
HOUSTON – Houston Tennis celebrated senior day with its fifth consecutive victory coming via a 4-2 win against conference rival Tulane on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars finished their home slate of action going undefeated at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility this spring.
The Cougars (11-6) earned their first conference win of the season against the Green Wave (7-5). Houston started the day off in doubles play, followed by an intense round of singles competition.
In doubles competition, Azul Pedemonti and Blanca Cortijo Parreno shut out Tulane's Lahari Yelmanchili and Charlotte Russell, 6-0. On Court 3, Sophie Gerits and Elena Trencheva outscored Tulane's Adelaide Lavery and Jiayun Zhu, 7-5.
Following the doubles point, Houston moved onto singles competition in a difficult matchup against the Green Wave, sending three matches to tiebreaker.
On Court 5, Parreno Cortijo defeated Russell, 6-2, 6-3. On Court 4, Gerits gave Houston a 3-0 lead after defeating Kristen Borland, 6-2, 6-1.
The Green Wave put two points on the board when Jiayun Zhu defeated Gabriela Giraldo (6-3, 6-0), and Yelemanchili defeated Laura Slisane (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) on Court 2.
The clinching point came on Court 1 courtesy of freshman Maria Dzemeshkevich, who battled hard against Mackenzie Clark (7-5, 3-6, 7-5) to earn the win for Houston.
With this win, the Cougars have now won three in a row against Tulane, and own the all-time series, 7-6.
Following the conclusion of the match, Houston celebrated its graduating senior, Sophie Gerits. Gerits has been with the Cougars since the 2018-19 season and is a team captain. Gerits will graduate with her degree in chemical engineering this spring.
Houston looks to continue the momentum against American Athletic Conference rival, USF on Friday at 10 a.m. CT in Tampa, Fla., from the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
