Columbia Secures Opener

Houston (11-7) sent all nine batters to the plate in the sixth, pushing across five runs thanks to six hits including a pinch-hit RBI-double from Cameron Nickens and pinch-hit RBI-single from Samuel Tormos. The hit barrage trimmed Houston's deficit to 9-5.

The Cougars threatened in the eighth, putting two aboard as Ryan Hernandez doubled and Nickens was hit by a pitch. Houston reliever Derrick Cherry tossed 3.0 hitless innings, striking out a season-high four batters.

Cougar starter Logan Clayton (1-3) allowed six runs on as many hits in 4.0 innings. The Lions (5-8) clubbed two home runs as part of a four-run third inning including a two-out, three-run shot from Hayden Schott.

After single runs in the fourth and fifth, Columbia tacked on three more in the sixth including a two-run triple from nine-hole hitter Weston Eberly. Columbia starter Sean Higgins (2-2) scattered seven hits and allowed three runs in 5.0 frames. Reliever Saajan May earned his first save, tossing 4.0 innings while allowing two runs.

UP NEXT
The teams return for the middle game at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The Cougars will send right-hander Nathan Medrano (2-0, 5.16 ERA) to the mound against Columbia righty Joe Sheets (0-0, 5.19 ERA).
