Uhse grand slam highlights middle game win
The Cougars (12-7) opened a 10-run advantage on a two-out, no-doubt grand slam from Uhse in the sixth inning. Uhse notched a career high five RBIs. The grand slam, which highlighted the five-run frame, was the first for a Cougar since April 24, 2021.
Columbia (5-9) could not solve Houston starter Nathan Medrano (3-0), who stranded multiple runners in each of his first three innings before retiring 10 straight. The right-hander struck out a career high eight batters, allowing six hits and two runs (one earned) in 6.1 frames.
Houston jumpstarted the scoring in the third highlighted by a three-run home run from Lopez as part of a four-run frame. The 356-foot line drive was the sophomore's second home run of the season and followed an RBI-single from Zach Arnold.
Brandon Burckel laced a leadoff triple into right center in the fifth inning and came home one batter later on a Uhse groundout. Fellow freshman Malachi Lott, who crashed into the wall to save extra bases defensively, added an RBI-single in the sixth.
Lions' starter Joe Sheets (0-1) permitted five runs on as many hits in 4.1 innings. Houston batted .455 (5-for-11) with two outs and .444 (4-for-9) with runners in scoring position. The Cougars produced five extra-base hits while seven players logged at least one hit.
UP NEXT
The teams close the three-game series at noon Sunday. The Cougars send right-hander Jaycob Deese (0-1, 3.54 ERA) to the mound against Columbia righty Billy Black (0-2, 4.50 ERA). The contest will serve as Kids Day and Family Day at the ballpark. Kids (12 and under) get in free with their youth jersey and may run the bases postgame.
