Houston Takes Down FAU, 6-1

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Houston Tennis recorded its eighth win of the season with a 6-1 victory against No. 70 Florida Atlantic on Sunday afternoon in Boca Raton, Florida, at the Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center. The match marked the first meeting between Houston and FAU in program history.
Houston (8-6) went to FAU (10-7), looking for its first road win on the season. Houston started the day off strong sweeping doubles play followed by a successful round of singles competition. The Cougars only allowed the Owls to put one point on the board.
For a second match in a row, pair Sophie Gerits and Elena Trencheva teamed up to defeat FAU's Amber McGinnis and Millie-Mae Matthews, 6-0. On Court Two, Laura Slisane and Maria Dzemeshkevich outscored FAU's Lexi Silna and Carina Sommer, 6-3.
Following the doubles point, Houston continued its success as it moved into singles competition, winning five out of six matches, with three matches ending in tiebreakers.
Gerits gave Houston a 2-0 lead on court 4, dominating FAU's Greta Schieroni 6-0, 6-1. Blanca Cortijo Parreno fought hard against Amber McGinnis in a tiebreaker match, with Cortijo Parreno clinching the point for the Cougars, 7-6, 7-3, 6-1.
Azul Pedemonti's matchup resulted in a tiebreaker, with Pedemonti defeating Silna, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. Dzemeshkevich defeated Martina Kudelova on court one, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 giving Houston its fifth point of the day.
Gabriela Giraldo sealed the win for the Cougars against Millie-Mae Matthews, 6-3, 7-5.
The lone point for FAU was put on the board after Slisane fell to Katerina Filip in a close matchup, 6-4, 6-3.
Houston will continue action with a doubleheader on Thursday at 10 a.m. against Binghamton, followed by 2 p.m. matchup against McNeese.
