Men’s Basketball Learns 2022 NCAA Tournament Destination

Cougars will play as No. 5 seed, face (12) UAB on Friday in Pittsburgh
#18/18 Houston will compete as the No. 5 seed and meet No. 12 seed UAB on Friday inside PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.
After celebrating their American Athletic Conference Tournament championship, the Cougars (29-5 • 15-3 American) learned their postseason destination and schedule inside Dickies Arena. From there, the team returned to the court to cut down the nets.
Sunday's 71-53 win over Memphis in the American Championship Title game marked only the fourth time in school history that the Cougars swept the conference regular-season and tournament championships. It was the first time with the sweep since the 1991-92 season.
While it is the 23rd NCAA Tournament appearance in school history, this marks only the fourth time in school history that the Cougars will compete in four straight NCAA Tournaments. The only other stretches came in 1981-84, 1970-73 and 1965-68.
The 2021-22 Cougars earned their place in the postseason with another award-winning campaign. After losing four starters from last year's squad which advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the first time in 37 years, this year's Cougars opened the season with 11 wins in its first 13 games.
However, the team endured a pair of blows with the loss of junior guard and Preseason All-American Athletic Conference First-Team selection Marcus Sasser and sophomore guard Tramon Mark to season-ending injuries in late December. That duo combined for more than 27 points per game with each remaining among the team's Top-Five scoring leaders still to date.
Despite those losses, the Cougars won their first nine games in conference play for only the third time in school history and finished the regular season with a 15-3 mark in league play to capture The American regular-season championship for the third time in the last four years.
Following the regular-season, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson was named The American Coach of the Year for the third time in the last four years – a first in program history – while graduate forwards Fabian White Jr. and Josh Carlton were named to the All-American Athletic Conference First Team.
Senior guard Kyler Edwards earned a place on the Second Team, while sophomore point guard Jamal Shead was named to the Third Team for the postseason honor of his young career.
