Ragin' Cajuns Upend Cougars

LAFAYETTE, La. – Louisiana unlocked a five-all tie, scoring the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the eighth inning, plating Kyle DeBarge from second base in route to a 9-5 win against Houston in the series opener from M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park on Saturday afternoon.

The game, which was tied at five before lightning suspended play on Friday, resumed in the eighth inning Saturday afternoon. The two teams pick up with the middle game at 3:10 p.m. Saturday. Houston sends right-hander Nathan Medrano (1-0, 4.76 ERA) to the mound. The contest can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on The Varsity Network.

The Cougars (9-5) used five hits to score four runs in the third inning. Zach Arnold crushed a two-run home run, the ninth of his career, to even the game at three-all. Anthony Tulimero followed with an RBI-single and Ryan Hernandez scored on a wild pitch for a 5-3 lead.

Louisiana (7-6) overcame a two-run deficit with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Five-hole hitter Heath Hood struck two home runs and accounted for three RBIs.

Houston's Brandon Uhse drove the first pitch of the game over the wall in left field for his seventh career home run, putting Houston ahead 1-0.

Houston starter Logan Clayton tossed 7.0 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits without a walk. The right-hander struck out six. Louisiana starter Tommy Ray lasted just 2.1 innings, permitting six hits and five runs alongside two walks and two strikeouts.
