Senior fires three straight sub-par rounds to lead Cougars in spring-opening tournament
ORLANDO – University of Houston seniors Ariana Saenz and Maria Jose Martinez each posted rounds of even-par 72 to lead the Cougars during the Final Round of the UCF Challenge on Tuesday morning at Eagle Creek Golf Club.
The tournament was originally scheduled to be played with 18 holes each day starting Sunday and running through Tuesday. However, with the threat of inclement weather on Tuesday, tournament officials chose to continue play with the Final Round beginning immediately after Monday's Second Round.
The tournament was halted due to darkness with most teams finishing 13-14 holes on the 6,349-yard, par72 layout on Monday night. Play resumed Tuesday morning with the final holes.
Saenz recorded her third straight round of par or lower with a 72 in the Final Round. The Porter, Texas, native drained her second and final birdie of the round on her final hole to tie for 37th at 1-under 215.
Martinez enjoyed her low round of the tournament, thanks to a pair of birdies on her first 10 holes, and tied for 51st at 218.
Sophomore Delaney Martin tied for 57th at 220, while senior Annie Kim tied for 69th at 221. Sophomore Nicole Abelar finished 87th at 225.
Facing a field with nine of the nation's Top-50 teams, Houston finished 15th with a score of 869.
No. 6 Wake Forest captured the tournament title with a score of 819 to finish 14 shots ahead of No. 34 Kentucky. No. 7 Virginia (837), Charleston (845), No. 12 Auburn (848), No. 40 Michigan State (851), Kent State (852), Miami (Fla.) (854), No. 33 Iowa State (857) and NC State (859) rounded out the Top 10.
Wake Forest's Carolina Lopez Chacarra earned medalist honors with a score of 19-under 197 to finish four strokes ahead of Kentucky's Jensen Castle. Wake Forest's Rachel Kuehn finished third at 204.
