Graduate forward averaged 21.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in two wins last week
HOUSTON – After leading the Cougars to two tough wins and reaching a pair of milestones, University of Houston graduate forward Fabian White Jr. was honored as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday.
In wins over third-place teams Tulane and Cincinnati last week, White led the Cougars with 21.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. The Atascocita, Texas, native buried 63.0 percent (17-of-27) of his shots from the field and tied for second on the team with 1.5 blocks per contest.
In Houston's home win over Tulane inside the Fertitta Center on Wednesday night, White set his then-career-high with 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds, including four offensive boards.
With his last basket of the night against the Green Wave, he moved past 1,000 points in his award-winning career, becoming the 49th player in school history to reach that total with the Cougars.
White followed that with a 22-point, 9-rebound performance at Cincinnati on Sunday night. He drained 8-of-13 shots from the field in his second straight 20-point effort and dished out two assists with a pair of blocks in more than 32 minutes of action.
After the Cougars built a 21-point advantage in the first half, Cincinnati rallied and moved to within 42-34 early in the second half. However, White buried a 3-pointer just over a minute later, and the Bearcats never moved closer to 11 points for the rest of the way.
With that win, White tied Houston great Michael Young as the winningest player in school career history with 109 victories. He now needs to compete in only four more games to move past point guard Galen Robinson Jr and set a Houston record with 137 games played during his career.
Memphis center Jalen Duren was named the league's Freshman of the Week. Darius Perry (UCF), Josh Minott (Memphis), Damian Dunn (Temple), Jaylen Forbes (Tulane) and Ricky Council IV (Wichita State) were named to the Honor Roll.
