Soggy Saturday Ends Stubbornly

Carden’s 3-hit day, Schulte 3-run home run not enough in loss
Houston (5-8) fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning, but rallied back with a 5-spot of their own. Pressure was immediately applied as the first three Cougar batters reached base via base hit or walk. An RBI ground out by first baseman LA Matthews plated the first run. Three pitches later the Cougars had a 5-2 lead off a 3-run blast from second baseman Becca Schulte.
The Cougars manufactured a run with two outs in the sixth inning after right fielder Amanda Carden laced her third hit of the game into right field, scoring junior pinch hitter Paige Hulsey.
A 5-run top of the seventh for the Islanders (8-9) put the visitors in front for the final time.
Houston battled valiantly in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a run on another RBI ground out but stranded the bases loaded down a run as the final out was recorded.
Saturday's nightcap against Houston Baptist was canceled due to weather and field conditions. The game will not be rescheduled.
NEXT UP
The Cougars will play at 4:30 p.m. against Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Sunday and then against Houston Baptist at 7 p.m. to close out the Houston Tournament.
