Cougars Find Success in Sunday Doubleheader

Houston adds two wins to its record against Southern and Prairie View A&M
HOUSTON – Houston Tennis hosted a doubleheader against Southern University and Prairie View A&M at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility on Sunday. The Cougars came out on top against both opponents with 7-0 defeats.

Against Southern University, the doubles teams of Azul Pedemonti and Maria Dzemeshkevich defeated the Jaguars' Kortni Stuart and Paris Washinton, 5-1. The pairings of Blanca Cortijo Parreno and Laura Slisane and Sophie Gerits and Elena Trencheva both defeated their Jaguar opponents, 6-0.

In singles play against Southern, all six Cougars came out on top sweeping the first match of the day. Receiving wins were Dzemeshkevich, Slisane, Gerits, Cortijo Parreno, Trencheva, and Manasi Reddy. All six Cougars did not go into any tie breakers and completed their matchups with success.

For the second round of play on Sunday, Houston hosted Prairie View A&M. The teams of Pedemonti and Dzemeshkevich and Cortijo Parreno and Slisane once again proved their power with impressive wins over their Panther rivals. Trencheva teamed up with Gabriela Giraldo to face Prairie View's Salma Sanchez Villalobos and Claudia Andrew Islas Medina. The pair won their match-up 6-3.

Pedemonti, Slisane, Gerits, Cortijo Parreno, Trencheva, and Giraldo took to the courts for singles. Four of the six Cougars competed in the first match and repeated their wins in their matches against Prairie View. With the addition of Giraldo and Pedemonti, the Cougars swept singles for the second time of the day.

Houston will travel to Texas Tech on Friday for a 4 p.m. match against the Red Raiders.
