Cougars land top 16 high school signee in Texas
HOUSTON – The University of Houston women's basketball team landed the National Letter of Intent signing of Westfield-Spring standout Kierra Merchant on Wednesday.
Merchant is a 5-10 guard from Spring, Texas played two seasons at Spring High School before transferring to Westfield for her junior and senior seasons.
The Spring-native ranked 19th in the state of Texas in scoring after she averaged 21.4 points per game as a sophomore in 2020-21. Merchant posted a season-best 30 points with 16 rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocks in a 61-55 win over Manvel HS (11/23/21).
Merchant's offensive scoring abilities landed her on Premier Basketball's Class of 2023 Texas Rankings. J. Key's ranked the offensive threat 16th out of 100 girl's basketball players in the state.
