CINCINNATI – The No. 23 University of Houston volleyball team continued to dominate in conference play, posting its fifth consecutive sweep in a three-set win over Cincinnati on Friday evening in Fifth Third Arena.
Houston (23-2, 14-0 The American) extended its win streak to 15 matches and has also won its last 17 sets dating back to the fourth set against Wichita State on Oct. 21. The Cougars also extended its win streak against fellow future Big 12 Conference member Cincinnati (6-17, 4-9 The American) to four matches.
With her first ace of the match, senior Abbie Jackson broke the program's all-time service aces record. She now has 143 in her career, surpassing Sami Sawyer's (1993-96) 140.
Jackson led the way on offense for Houston, posting a match-best 14 kills while senior Morgan Janda recorded her second consecutive double-double, tallying 18 assists and 12 digs. Senior Rachel Tullos also earned a match-leading six blocks.
Houston held its opponent to a sub-.100 hitting percentage for the third time this season, limiting the Bearcats to a .049 efficiency and never allowing a set hitting percentage over .100.
SET ONE
Houston and Cincinnati traded points to start the first set. With the Cougars leading 15-13 at the media timeout, a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 19-14 and a 3-0 run later in the set gave Houston enough to take the frame, 25-22.
Jackson earned six kills in the first set, leading both teams, while Janda and junior Annie Cooke both tallied five assists. The Cougars also suppressed any offense from Cincinnati, allowing the Bearcats only a .029 hitting percentage in the first frame.
SET TWO
Houston kept the momentum and surged in set two. Tied at 7-7, Houston posted a 6-1 run to take a 13-8 lead. Another 7-1 run later in the frame was all the Cougars needed to win the set, 25-16, and to set up a potential sweep in the third set.
Houston's offense shined in the frame with a .333 hitting percentage with 18 kills and only five errors.
SET THREE
With the opportunity for a fifth consecutive sweep, Houston didn't delay in shutting the door on any potential comebacks. The Cougars jumped out to a 7-5 lead, and after a while of trading points with Cincinnati, went on a 6-1 run to push their advantage to 18-13. While the Bearcats closed the gap slightly, a kill from graduate Isabel Theut on match point clinched the set, 25-21, and the game for the Cougars.
UP NEXT
The Cougars continue a three-game road swing with a pair of matches next week at Tulsa and Wichita State. Houston starts against the Golden Hurricane on Friday, Nov. 11 before heading to Wichita on Sunday, Nov. 13.
