Senior guard receives latest preseason honor; Cougars tip off season vs. Northern Colorado at 7 p.m., Monday
HOUSTON – University of Houston senior guard Marcus Sasser received another preseason honor when he was named to the preseason watch list for the National Association of Basketball Coaches Player of the Year Award on Thursday.
Sasser was one of 20 student-athletes nationally to be named to the Watch List.
Selected by a vote of Division I head coaches, the NABC Division Player of the Year Award will be announced the week of the 2023 Men's Final Four in Houston.
ABOUT MARCUS SASSER
This was Sasser's latest preseason honor.
The Dallas native has been named to Preseason All-America teams by the Associated Press, The Almanac, Blue Ribbon College Yearbook, Dick Vitale and College Hoops Today
Sasser earned a place on the Jerry West Award Preseason Watch List. That honor is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate shooting guard.
In October, Sasser was named the American Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year and earned a place on the Preseason First Team in voting by the league's head coaches.
Sasser posted four 20-point games in his first 12 contests a year ago, including season highs with 26 points in wins against Rice and Northwestern State, before being sidelined for the remainder of the season following foot surgery in late December 2021.
Prior to that, he drained seven 3-pointers in the first half of the win against Northwestern State, tying the school record set by Robert McKiver against Charleston on Nov. 17, 2007.
With 180 3-pointers and 498 3-point attempts to date, Sasser is poised to set Houston career records in both categories as he prepares for the 2022-23 season. He also needs only 144 more points to become the 50th 1,000-point career scorer in school history.
