Houston duo recognized among nation’s top offensive players with Texas ties
HOUSTON – University of Houston senior Clayton Tune and junior Nathaniel Dell have proven to be among the top quarterback-wide receiver duos in the country. On Wednesday, both were named among 16 semifinalists for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.
The award recognizes the top Division I offensive player with ties to the state of Texas who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity.
Nominees must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year Division I Texas college.
Houston is one of three programs, joined by TCU and SMU, with multiple semifinalists. This year's candidates include five running backs, five quarterbacks, five wide receivers and one offensive lineman.
Dell, who was named a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award on Monday, ranks second nationally in receiving touchdowns (14) and receiving yards (1,193). The wide receiver is third in receptions per game (8.5). The Daytona Beach, Fla., native leads the country with 29 touchdown receptions since the start of the 2020 season.
Tune leads the nation in points responsible for per game (22.4) and is tied for the national lead in passing touchdowns (35) and points responsible for (246). The senior is sixth in completions per game (26.36) and eighth in passing yards (3,459). The Carrollton, Texas, native who leads The American in career touchdown passes (99), is also four touchdown passes shy of matching Tanner Mordecai of SMU's American Conference single-season touchdown record (39) set a season ago.
Tyler Rose Award fan voting begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday and runs through noon CT Sunday, Dec. 11. Click here to vote once daily. Finalists will be announced Tuesday, Dec. 13, and the winner will be recognized at a banquet in Tyler, Texas, on Wednesday, Jan. 11.
