Senior collects latest preseason honor; Cougars face Texas Southern at 7 p.m., Wednesday, in Fertitta Center
HOUSTON – University of Houston senior guard Marcus Sasser was named to the John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy's Preseason Top 50 Watch List on Tuesday morning.
Chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball experts, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for the most prestigious honors in college basketball, the Wooden Award All American Team™ and Most Outstanding Player Award.
The players on the Watch List are considered strong candidates for the 2023 John R. Wooden Award Men's Player of the Year presented by Wendy's.
Players not chosen to the preseason list are still eligible for the Wooden Award™ midseason list, late season list, and the National Ballot.
The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Nearly 1,000 voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games.
The Wooden Award All American Team™ will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2023 John R. Wooden Award will be presented in Los Angeles in April.
ABOUT MARCUS SASSER
This was Sasser's latest preseason honor.
The Dallas native has been named to Preseason All-America teams by the Associated Press, The Almanac, Blue Ribbon College Yearbook, Dick Vitale, College Hoops Today and Sporting News.
Sasser earned a place on NABC Player of the Year Watch List and was selected for the Preseason Watch List of the Jerry West Award, presented annually to the nation's top collegiate shooting guard.
In October, Sasser was named the American Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year and earned a place on the Preseason First Team in voting by the league's head coaches.
Three games into the 2022-23 season, Sasser had led the Cougars to a 3-0 record and #3 ranking in both national polls. He scored 21 points in the Cougars' season-opening win over Northern Colorado on Nov. 7 and totaled 19 points with a career-high seven rebounds in Monday's win over Oral Roberts.
Sasser posted four 20-point games in his first 12 contests a year ago, including season highs with 26 points in wins against Rice and Northwestern State, before being sidelined for the remainder of the season following foot surgery in late December 2021.
With 187 3-pointers and 518 3-point attempts to date, Sasser is poised to set Houston career records in both categories as he prepares for the 2022-23 season. He also needs only 99 more points to become the 50th 1,000-point career scorer in school history.
