WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- Houston wide receiver Nathaniel Dell has hauled in nine touchdowns over his last five games. Dell's eight multi-touchdown games since the start of the 2021 season and 2,248 receiving yards in the same timeframe both lead the nation. This season, the junior ranks second nationally in receiving touchdowns (12).
- Leading at the intermission has been key for the Cougars. Houston is 2-0 when leading at halftime (at Navy, vs. South Florida) and 3-4 when trailing at the break. The Cougars have won 12 consecutive games when leading at halftime. Houston's 28 points in the first half against South Florida, coming in its last home game, were the most since producing as many on Oct. 1, 2021, at Tulsa.
- Houston is coming off a 77-63 loss at SMU last Saturday. The 140 combined points were the most in an FBS regulation game all-time. The Cougars' 63 points matched the FBS record for most points scored by a losing team in regulation. Houston produced 710 total yards – the fourth-most in an FBS game this season – and averaged 10.0 yards per play – the 10th-best mark by an FBS program in 2022.
- With an assortment of players out or having missed time due to injury, Houston has showcased its "next man up" mentality. Running back Stacy Sneed rushed for 100 yards at Navy and notched his first two career touchdowns against South Florida. Wide receiver Peyton Sawyer registered his first touchdown reception against South Florida. Tight end Matt Byrnes made his first career reception and caught his first career touchdown at Navy
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
- Houston has won eight of its last 10 home games (Nov. 14, 2020-present) and is 37-14 (.725) at TDECU Stadium since the facility opened in 2014. Houston is 21-11 (.656) in conference home games since 2015. The 21 league victories rank tied for 25th nationally in that span.
- With a win on Saturday, Houston would become bowl-eligible for the 15th time in the last 18 seasons (2005-present). The Cougars' 14 bowl appearances since 2005 ranks tied with Texas A&M for the most among programs in Texas.
- Houston quarterback Clayton Tune became the American Athletic Conference's all-time passing touchdown leader (92) with his seven touchdown passes last Saturday at SMU. Tune's seven passing touchdowns are the second most by an FBS quarterback this season while his 527 passing yards ranks third. Tune became the third FBS player since 2000 to log 500 passing yards and 100 rushing yards in a single game.
- The Cougars have won 95 games since the start of the 2011 season, a mark that ranks 23rd nationally and tied with Texas A&M for the second most among Texas FBS programs – trailing only Baylor (96). The Cougars have won one more game than TCU (94) and 11 more games than Texas (84).
- Houston is 3-2 in American Athletic Conference play and is tied for fourth in the league standings with East Carolina and SMU. Tulane (4-0) paces the league followed by UCF (4-1) and Cincinnati (4-1). UCF's final three games include: at Tulane, vs. Navy and at USF. Cincinnati's final three games are vs. East Carolina, at Temple and vs. Tulane. Tulane's remaining schedule is vs. UCF, vs. SMU and at Cincinnati.
SCOUTING TEMPLE
- Houston and Temple are meeting for the ninth time. Houston leads the all-time series 7-1 including a 3-1 mark in Houston. The Cougars are 5-1 against Temple as co-members of The American highlighted by a 24-13 win in the inaugural Championship game on Dec. 5, 2015.
- Temple dominated USF, 54-28 last time out. The Owls exploded on offense as the team did not punt once for the first time in school history. Running back Edward Saydee scored three touchdowns and tallied 334 all-purpose yards (265 rushing, 69 receiving), good for fourth most in a game in over 50 years. Quarterback E.J. Warner completed 27 passes for 344 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions.
- Linebacker Layton Jordan set a school record with three defensive touchdowns this season. Only three teams in the country have more defensive touchdowns this season than Layton Jordan. Western Kentucky has five, while Cincinnati and Southern Miss have four.
LAST TIME AGAINST TEMPLE
- A season ago, Houston used a 37-8 victory against Temple to improve to 7-0 in American Athletic Conference play and lock up a spot in The American Athletic Conference Championship game. The Cougars intercepted three passes and held the Owls to 10 first downs.
- Alton McCaskill IV rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns as No. 17 Houston methodically dispatched Temple 37-8 on Saturday to clinch a berth in the American Athletic Conference championship game.
- The Cougars defense got interceptions from cornerback Marcus Jones, safety Gervarrius Owens and Gleson Sprewell while holding the Temple offense to just 10 first downs and 48 total plays in the game.
