Houston closes out Senior Night, final American Athletic Conference match with 3-0 shutout
HOUSTON – Forward Janna Singleton and midfielder Samantha Wiehe led the University of Houston Soccer program to a 3-0 shutout victory against Temple on Senior Night Thursday evening at the Carl Lewis International Complex.
The Cougars (6-7-3, 2-4-2 American) wrapped up their season playing a dominant full 90 minutes, registering 17 shots in the match, holding the Owls (1-11-4, 0-8-0 American) to three shots on the evening.
Prior to the start of the match, Houston honored its seven seniors Madison Dichiara, Madison Gear, Rylie Haussler, Janna Singleton, Addie Tate as well as captains Emma Clarke and Taylor Garza-Freeman for their accomplishments during their time spent as Cougars.
Houston set the tone early on offense as it applied pressure into the 18-yard box posting the first shot of the match.
After midfielder Caitlyn Matthews earned a free kick near the top of the 18-yard box, midfielder Samantha Wiehe took the set piece and tucked the ball into the right corner to open the scoring at 1-0 in the fourth minute.
Houston kept its foot on the pedal as it continued to push up into the box and created several scoring chances. The Cougars capitalized on a Temple turnover as forward Janna Singleton put her right foot to the ball for a goal at the 11th minute to double the lead at 2-0.
The Cougars continued to press up on the ball and forced turnovers as they outshot the Owls 8-2 in the first half heading into halftime.
Entering the second half, Houston remained on the attack and came just short of a third goal as a shot from Matthews hit off the crossbar. Momentum never swayed as the Cougars extended their lead to 3-0 as Singleton doubled down and picked up her brace with a goal in the 67th minute.
Temple pushed to pull one back in the final 15 minutes of the match, but Houston's defense was too much as the Cougars closed out the match with a victory.
Singleton posted two goals on four shots, ending the season as the leading goal scorer for Houston with five goals. Goalkeeper Haley Woodward earned her second career clean sheet with three saves on the night.
As Houston concluded its final season in the American Athletic Conference, the Cougars will now shift their focus to the Big 12 Conference on July 1, 2023.
