PHILADELPHIA – University of Houston graduate middle-blocker Isabel Theut earned her first double-double of the season to aid the Cougars in a 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-14, 25-21) win over Temple on Sunday afternoon at McGonigle Hall.
Houston (13-2, 4-0 The American) has now posted its best record through 15 games in the David Rehr era and its best 15 game record since 2018. The team continues its league unbeaten streak through four games, remaining tied for the top spot in the conference with UCF.
Theut posted 15 kills and a career-high 15 digs in the match, earning her first career double-double. Junior setter and preseason all-conference team member Annie Cooke tallied a season-best 45 assists and senior outside hitter Abbie Jackson led the match with 21 kills, her 16th career match with 20-plus kills.
SET 1
After a pair of 4-0 run gave Houston a 12-9 advantage in the first set, the Cougars traded points with Temple for the remainder of the set, earning a 25-21 win. The set victory was Houston's sixth in a row dating back to the Cincinnati game on Sept. 25.
Three different Cougars posted four kills in the set, with senior Rachel Tullos tallying a .667 hitting percentage on six attacks.
SET 2
Houston's set win streak came to an end in the second set. Despite leading 13-9 and 14-10, an 8-1 run by the Owls to make the score 18-15 allowed an opening for Temple to take the set, 25-23.
SET 3
The Cougars rebounded quickly in the third set. A 6-1 run put Houston ahead 11-5 and another 6-1 run later in the set was too much for Temple to overcome. Houston earned a 25-14 victory, its seventh set win with a lead of 10-or-more points this season.
SET 4
The decisive set was another back-and-forth affair with six ties and two lead changes. Houston started strong, earning a 3-0 lead with kills from Theut and Jackson and a Temple ball-handling error. Two 3-0 runs late in the set proved to be the difference-maker, with a Theut kill capping a 25-21 set win and a 3-1 match victory for Houston.
UP NEXT
The Cougars return home for a pair of matches, starting with league-favorite and nationally-ranked No. 24 Central Florida on Friday at 7 p.m. The Knights lead the all-time series, 13-12, but the teams split the results in a pair of matches last season. South Florida also visits the Fertitta Center on Sunday at 1 p.m.
