Volleyball Sweeps Memphis to Remain Unbeaten in Conference Play

MEMPHIS – The University of Houston volleyball team remained undefeated in American Athletic conference play behind a 27-dig performance from junior Kate Georgiades in a three-set sweep against Memphis on Sunday.
Houston (17-2, 8-0 The American) exits the weekend of matches with two 3-0 victories, its third time this season it has posted back-to-back sweeps. The Cougars have won their last nine game, their longest win streak under head coach David Rehr, and the last nine matches in the all-time series against Memphis (14-7, 4-4 The American).
Georgiades' 27 digs are the third most in program history in a three-set match. Senior Abbie Jackson posted her sixth double-double of the season and 27th of her career with 12 kills and 14 digs. Graduate Isabel Theut recorded her 41st career double-digit kill performance by leading the match with 14.
Overall, the Cougars notched 11 blocks behind six block assists from sophomore Kellen Morin and five from senior Rachel Tullos.
SET ONE
Houston jumped out to an early 9-4 lead, but Memphis closed the gap to lead 19-16 late in the set. The Cougars held strong and battled back, tying the frame at 24-24 and back-to-back kills from Tullos closed the set for Houston, 26-24.
SET TWO
The back-and-forth battle continued in the second frame. In a set that saw 18 ties and six lead changes, the Cougars were able to withstand a strong defensive showing from Memphis with stellar defense of their own to earn the second set win, 27-25.
SET THREE
The battle persisted into the third with another frame featuring 17 ties and nine lead changes. Up 23-21 late in the set, the Cougars held off a late attempt at a Memphis comeback to win the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-0.
UP NEXT
Houston returns home for a five-game homestand starting on Friday, Oct. 21 with the Cougars' Dig Pink match against Wichita State at 7 p.m. Fans can get free admission to the match by showing a receipt of a donation of any amount to the Side-Out Foundation at the Box Office.
