
Houston Tennis Wins Spring Home Opener

Cougars defeat Louisiana Monroe in first home match of spring
HOUSTON – Houston Tennis defeated Louisiana Monroe 5-2 in its spring home opener on Friday at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
The Cougars started the day off strong sweeping doubles play followed by a successful round of singles competition. Houston only allowed the War Hawks to put two points on the board.
To win the doubles point, all three Houston Tennis pairs came out on top. Azul Pedemonti and Maria Dzemeshkevich teamed up to defeat Louisiana Monroe's Hala Badwy and Alessandra Anghel, 6-4. Beside Pedemonti and Dzemeshkevich on Court One, Laura Slisane and Blanca Cortijo Parreno outscored ULM's Jimena Paula Garbino and Madalina Grigoriu, 6-3. Court Five also showed Cougar success when Gabriela Giraldo and Elena Trencheva rounded out doubles play with a 6-3 win over Giovanna Pereira and Brianna Gomez.
Following the doubles point, Houston continued its success as it moved into singles play. On Court Three, Pedemonti defeated Grigoriu while Sophie Gerits overcame Garbino on Court Four. To clinch the match for the Cougars, Dzemeshkevich defeated Anghel on Court Two.
After clinching the match, Houston finished out its sets to complete the day of play. Giraldo defeated the War Hawks' Pereira. The two points for Louisiana Monroe were put on the board after Slisane fell to Badwy and Cortijo Parreno fell to Gomez.
Houston postponed its Saturday match against McNeese State and will schedule it for another date. An announcement will be soon to follow once the new date of competition is scheduled.
Cougar Tennis fans will have the opportunity to catch Houston at home for free six more times throughout the spring.
UP NEXT
Houston will head out for a three-match road trip beginning Tuesday in Fort Worth facing TCU. The time of the match is to be announced. The Cougars will then travel to the University of Colorado to take on the Buffs on Friday in Boulder at 1 p.m. The following Friday, Houston will travel to the University of Alabama for a 5 p.m. match.
