COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Winners of its first six matches with a pair of tournament championships to start the season, the University of Houston Volleyball program returns to action this weekend at the Texas A&M Invitational.
Â
The Cougars meet host Texas A&M at 6 p.m., Friday, before taking on UTSA (10 a.m., Saturday) and Albany (5 p.m., Saturday) inside Reed Arena.
Â
Houston enters this weekend's tournament after posting three wins in two days at its own Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup inside the Fertitta Center last weekend.
Â
Down 12-7 in the fifth and final set against Mississippi State, the Cougars scored eight of the last nine points to clinch the win and reeled off a pair of victories over McNeese and ULM to claim the title.
Â
At 6-0, this is the best start under Head Coach David Rehr – who is in his third year with the program – and is the best start for Houston since the 2018 team started 8-0.
Â
Junior outside hitter Abbie Jackson, senior middle blocker Isabel Theut and senior outside hitter Kortlyn Henderson were named to the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup All-Tournament Team for their impressive performances.
Â
Jackson led the Cougars with 3.00 kills per set and 43.0 total points, while Teut assembled a .446 attack percentage with 32 kills and only seven errors in 56 swings. Henderson compiled 2.3 kills per set with five total blocks in the three wins and blasted five of her 14 kills in the fifth set in the win over Mississippi State on Sept. 3.
Â
Sophomore libero Kate Georgiades continues to be a defensive leader for the Cougars topping the team with 4.8 digs per set, including a career-high 32 digs in the thrilling, come-from-behind win over the Bulldogs.
