NORMAN, Okla. – University of Houston senior Maria Jose Martinez lowered her score for the second straight round to tie for 15th with a total of 213 at the Schooner Fall Classic on Monday afternoon.
Competing on the 6,112-yard, par-70 course at Belmar Golf Club, Martinez started her Final Round off No. 10 and quick moved into red numbers with her first birdie of the day on the par-3 11th hole.
Despite bogeys on two of her next seven holes, the Alvarado, Mexico, native recovered to drain back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3-4 and capped her tournament with five straight pars for the ninth Top-20 finish of her collegiate career.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 880 to finish 13th. Oklahoma State won the team title with a total of 824 to finish 20 shots in front of Texas A&M. Baylor (848), Illinois (855), Florida State (855), TCU (861), Oklahoma (862), UTSA (866), Iowa State (867) and Texas State (868) rounded out the Top-10 leaders.
Senior Ariana Saenz and sophomore Delaney Martin tied for 54th at 223, while senior Annie Kim tied for 68th at 227. Making her Houston debut, sophomore Nicole Abelar tied for 76th at 235.
This was the Cougars' second fall tournament after competing at the season-opening Sam Golden Invitational at Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch in Denton, Texas, on Sept. 13-14.
UP NEXT
Following the Schooner Fall Classic, the Cougars will tee off at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 4-6 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. The Cougars will join with their UH male counterparts at that event, which will air on GOLF Channel each day.
From there, Houston closes out its fall schedule when it competes at the Jim West Challenge on Oct. 17-18 at Kissing Tree Golf Club in San Marcos, Texas.
