Cougars meet Western Carolina at 10 a.m., Friday before facing Alabama (6 p.m., Friday) & Tennessee Tech (1 p.m., Saturday)
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Winners of eight of its first nine matches, the University of Houston Volleyball program closes out its non-conference schedule when it takes part in the Bama Bash inside Foster Auditorium this weekend.
The Cougars will have a busy Friday with matches against Western Carolina (10 a.m.) and host Alabama (6 p.m.) before closing out the tournament against Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m., Saturday.
With an 8-1 record, the 2021 Cougars have enjoyed the third-best start in program history after nine matches under Head Coach David Rehr. Only the 1975 and 1976 teams started undefeated in a similar time span.
The Cougars own little to no history against this weekend's opponents. Houston owns a 1-0 lead in the series against Alabama after taking a 3-2 win on Nov. 26, 2004, in Baton Rouge, La. This will be the first time Houston has faced Western Carolina or Tennessee Tech.
Sophomore libero Kate Georgiades continues to lead the Cougars and rank fifth in the American Athletic Conference with 4.5 digs per set. The College Station, Texas, native led Houston with 54 dig, including 23 in the finale against Albany, to be named to the All-Tournament Team.
Georgiades also was named The American's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, a first in her collegiate career.
Junior outside hitter Abbie Jackson leads Houston with 3.6 kills per set, while senior outside hitter Kennedy Warren posted the team's most recent double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs in the win over Albany.
Sophomore setter Annie Cooke tops the Cougars with 10.0 assists per set and ranks second in the league with that total.
