CHOUDRANT, La. – University of Houston COVID senior Alexander Frances battled his way back from a tough start to finish with an even-par 72 in the Final Round of the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate and tie for seventh with a score of 5-under 211 at Squire Creek Country Club on Tuesday.
As a team, the Cougars finished with a score of 871 to tie with Lamar for seventh on the 7,105-yard, par-72 course.
Starting his day off No. 1, Frances ran into trouble with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 3 and moved to 4-over with a double bogey on No. 7.
However, the Stege, Denmark, native recovered quickly and began chipping away with a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole. After closing his front nine with a par, he opened his back nine with consecutive birdies and returned to even par with his final birdie of the day on the 405-yard, par-4 14th hole.
It was his first Top-10 finish of the season and the eighth of his career.
LSU captured the team title with a three-day score of 841 to finish seven shots ahead of UTSA. Southern Miss finished third at 851 with Louisiana Tech (854) and Little Rock (862) rounding out the Top-Five leaders.
Louisiana Tech's Sam Murphy earned medalist honors with a score of 13-under 203 to finish four strokes in front of Southern Miss' Hunter Atkins. Little Rock's Magnus Lomholt finished third at 208.
Junior Austyn Reily tied for 28th at 217, while COVID senior Andrew Gibson tied for 40th at 219. COVID senior Laurence Crea tied for 66th at 224, while redshirt freshman Jacob Borow tied for 101st at 232. Playing as an individual, junior Marcus Wochner tied for 66th at 224.
This was the second of four fall tournaments for the Cougars.
UP NEXT
Following the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate, the Cougars will tee off at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 4-6 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. The Cougars will join with their UH female counterparts at that event, which will air on GOLF Channel each day.
From there, the Cougars close out their fall schedule when they compete at The Williams Cup presented by Stitch Golf on Oct. 25-26 at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C.
