CHOUDRANT, La. – The University of Houston Men's Golf Program fired a 4-under 284 to hold the First-Round lead the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon.
Competing on the 7,105-yard, par-72 layout at Squire Creek Country Club, the Cougars stood one stroke ahead of Little Rock, Southern Miss and LSU. Troy and host Louisiana Tech were tied for fifth at 286. Lamar (290), UTSA (290), UT Arlington (291) and Francis Marion (291) rounded out the Top-10 leaders.The three-day, 54-hole tournament continues with the Second Round on Monday and wraps up Tuesday.
Three Cougars stood among the first-day's Top-20 leaders and were led by junior Austyn Reily.
Reily overcame a brief slow start to shoot a 3-under 69 to lead the Cougars and was tied for fourth. Starting off No. 10, the Pottsboro, Texas, native bogeyed No. 10 but quickly rebounded with four consecutive birdies.
Reily added another birdie on No. 17 and rallied from a rebound on No. 1 to drain his sixth birdie of the day on the 175-yard, par-3 fifth hole. Despite a double bogey on No. 6, Reily regained one of those strokes with his team-leading seventh birdie of the day on No. 9.
Lamar's Kevin Lee shot a 67 on Sunday to hold the First-Round lead. Louisiana Tech's Sam Murphy and LSU's Drew Doyle were tied for second at 68, while Reily joined Will McFadden (Troy), Brantley Scott (Troy) and Hunter Atkins (Southern Miss) in a tie for fourth.
COVID senior and 2021 All-American Athletic Conference performer Alexander Frances was tied for eighth at 70. The Stege, Denmark, native drained a pair of birdies without a bogey on his front nine and overcame three bogeys with three birdies on his second nine, including back-to-back efforts on the final two holes.
COVID senior Andrew Gibson was tied for 17th with a 71. Making nine straight pars off No. 10, Gibson rallied from a bogey on No. 1 with birdies on No. 2 and again on No. 5. Despite a bogey on No. 8, the Perthshire, Scotland, native closed his day with his third and final bogey.
COVID senior Laurence Crea was tied for 54th at 74, while redshirt freshman Jacob Borow was tied for 73rd at 76. Playing as an individual, junior Marcus Wochner posted a 72 and was tied for 28th.
This is the second of four fall tournaments for the Cougars.

PAIRINGS
For Monday's Second Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Southern Miss, LSU and Little Rock, beginning off No. 1 at 11:40 a.m.
Borow starts the Second Round at 11:40 a.m., with Crea (11:50 a.m.), Gibson (Noon), Frances (12:10 p.m.) and Reily (12:20 p.m.) following. Wochner begins the second day for the Cougars off No. 1 at 7:30 a.m.

UP NEXT
Following the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate, the Cougars will tee off at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 4-6 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. The Cougars will join with their UH female counterparts at that event, which will air on GOLF Channel each day.
From there, the Cougars close out their fall schedule when they compete at The Williams Cup presented by Stitch Golf on Oct. 25-26 at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C.
