Gauntt, Castleberry take two of top-three spots
HOUSTON – Houston cross country's Darby Gauntt took runner-up and Maddy Castleberry captured third place to highlight action for the Cougars at the 45th annual Rice Invitational from the Rice Intramural Fields on Friday evening.
Gauntt ran a 13:55.00 in the 4,000 meters, taking second among 83 competitors. Six Houston women finished in the Top 25 including Castleberry (13:58.10) who logged her second consecutive Top-15 finish to begin the season.
In the men's 6,000 meters, Brandon Seagreaves paced action for the Cougars, finishing 13th at 19:38.40. Teammate Devin Vallejo-Bannister registered his second top-20 finisher of the season, taking 16th at 19:44.10 one week after placing sixth at the Aggie Opener.
Regan Lobodzinski took 14th (14:32.40) on the women's side, followed by Claire Meyer in 16th (14:34.50), Daniela Castillo in 21st (14:40.00) and Victoria Ruiz in 24th (14:47.70) to round out the Top 25. Erin Rivera ran a 14:49.60 to take 26th while Sondos Moursy placed 29th (14:56.20), Zosia Bulhak took 38th (15:21.00) and Eleni Kaiser finished 39th (15:23.10).
Alan Elbanna took 37th (20:33.30) among 98 competitors for the men, followed by Thomas Crider in 52nd (21:06.70), Carlos Castillo in 58th (21:39.90) and Trey Grant in 69th (22:00.20). Christian Gilmore also placed 89th (23:10.00).

Houston returns to action two weeks from Saturday at the Lake Charles Toyota Cowboy Stampede, hosted by McNeese from the Enos Derbonne Sports Complex. The Cougars cap their regular season on Saturday, Oct. 16, at Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invitational.
