ABOUT DWIGHT DAVIS
A Houston native and Worthing High School product, Davis lettered for the Cougars from 1969 to 1972. During that time, he led Houston to a 67-19 record with three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including back-to-back Sweet 16 berths in 1970 and 1971.
Nearly 50 years after his final game in the Scarlet & White, Davis continues to rank seventh in Houston history with 1,741 points and stands fifth with 961 rebounds.
Davis earned a place on the 1972 All-America Third Team as a senior after averaging 24.4 points and 11.7 rebounds per game, his third straight year with a season double-double. He also was a three-time member of the USBWA District VI Team and earned a place on the NABC All-District squad twice.
Following his collegiate playing days, Davis was taken with the No. 3 overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 1972 NBA Draft. He played for three seasons with the Cavaliers, earning a place on the 1972-73 NBA All-Rookie Team and played for two years with the Golden State Warriors.
Davis was inducted into the Houston Athletics Hall of Honor in 2006.
ABOUT 2021-22 COUGARS
Two starters and seven lettermen return from the Cougars' 2020-21 team, which advanced to the sixth NCAA Final Four in school history, captured the American Athletic Conference Tournament championships and posted a 28-4 overall record.
Entering his eighth season with the Cougars, Sampson has competed in more than 1,000 games during his award-winning career. He ranks as the second-winningest coach in program history and leads the Cougars in overall winning percentage (.723) and conference winning percentage (.680).
Junior guard Marcus Sasser returns from an All-American Athletic Conference season a year ago, averaging 13.7 points per game with 78 3-pointers.
Forward Fabian White Jr. returns as a "super-senior" after battling through a severe knee injury, surgery and rehab to return to the lineup in the second half of the season a year ago. Sophomore guard Tramon Mark showed basketball fans a promising future with clutch late-season shots against Memphis and against Rutgers in the NCAA Tournament Second Round.
Six newcomers – three transfers and three freshmen – join the program in 2021-22
