Cougars begin action at Hayward Field on Wednesday
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program is set to make its return to Eugene for the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships taking place June 9-12 at Hayward Field.
A total of 12 individuals and three relays will head to Eugene for the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The men are set to compete on Wednesday and Friday, as the women compete on Thursday and Saturday. Action is set to begin at the newly renovated Hayward Field on Wednesday when the men begin competition at 5:02 p.m. PT.

LIVE RESULTS
Both the men's and women's team enter the meet ranked among the Top-30 squads in the NCAA as the men sit at No. 11 and the women at No. 27. The UH men lead the NCAA in qualifiers in the sprints and hurdles with eight and the team is eighth in total qualifiers for the meet. Four UH men will hit the track in the 200-meter, leading the NCAA in qualifiers for the event.
Brianne Bethel will have a busy week and will be competing in both the 100-meter and 200-meter individually. She is also a member of a both UH relay squads, as the team qualified both a 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay for the first time since 2008. Bethel is set to compete alongside freshman sprinter, Camille Rutherford who is set to make her first NCAA appearance in the 100-meter.
Samiyah Samuels is scheduled for her third run at the NCAA Outdoor Championships as a qualifier in the Long Jump. At the NCAA West Regional, Samuels earned a seventh-place finish and was the silver medalist at the 2021 American Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Mikaila Martin looks to put on a strong performance in the Hammer Throw this week after shattering the program record in the event multiple times this season and securing a second-place finish at the league championships.
Shaun Maswanganyi and Travis Collins will also have a busy weekend ahead of them as the duo is set to compete for the Cougars in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 4x100-meter relay. Maswanganyi has a had a fantastic debut season in the states and is currently receiving votes for The Bowerman Award. Collins has been a consistent performer for the Cougars in the sprints and is set for his second straight NCAA appearance. Collins, Maswanganyi, Jordan Booker and Christian Hamberlin will look to put up numbers for the Cougars in the 200-meter as three of the four make their NCAA debut.
Quivell Jordan and Dayo Akindele will represent Houston in the hurdles with Jordan competing in the 400-meter hurdles and Akindele in the 110-meter hurdles. Jordan is fresh off a conference title in the event and enters the race with the 10th-fastest seed time among collegians this season, Akindele will make his first NCAA appearance in a Cougar uniform, making up for lost time after qualifying for the 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships before it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the field, Benjamin Okafor looks to become the next Cougar All-American in the long jump as he represents UH in his first appearance at the NCAA Championships as a Cougar.
