Houston Advances to Friday Finals in Four Events

Cougar freshman one of six men to advance in both the 100m and 200m
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program will send two individuals and its 4x100-meter relay to the Final of four events at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

The Houston 4x100-meter relay comprised of Travis Collins, Jordan Booker. Christian Hamberlin and Shaun Maswanganyi opened the day for the Cougars with a stellar performance to advance to the Final set to take place on Friday. The squad did what needed to be done, clocking a time of 38.84, the third-fastest of the day.
Maswanganyi continued the Cougar sprint tradition for the Cougars, becoming the fifth straight UH sprinter to advance to the final of the 100-meter. The freshman crossed the finish line at 10.14 to win his heat with the fourth-fastest time of the semifinals. This marks the second straight Championships that a Cougar sprinter has qualified for the final of both the 100-meter and 200-meter. In his second individual event of the evening, the freshman clocked a personal-best time of 20.18 in the 200-meter to win his heat and advance with the third-best performance of the day.
Quivell Jordan extended his senior season, punching his ticket to the final of the 400-meter hurdles. Jordan qualified for Fridays Final behind a time of 50.17, taking third in his heat. This marks Jordan's first appearance in a Final at the NCAA Championships.
Christyan Sampy earned Second Team All-America honors after finishing 11th in the pole vault. The sophomore cleared 5.30m (17-4.50). In the Long Jump, Benjamine Okafor closed out the day with Honorable Mention All-America honors with a series-best mark of 7.18m (23-6.75).
Tomorrow will be the first day of action for the Cougar women with action set to begin at 1 p.m. PT when Mikaila Martin steps into the ring to compete in the Hammer Throw.
