Fletcher Called Up, MiLB Season Underway

Former Houston standout makes return to Seattle
HOUSTON – Former Houston standout Aaron Fletcher has been called up to the Seattle Mariners, his second career stint with the big league club, while a host of Cougars continue their professional careers with the start of the minor league baseball season Tuesday.

Fletcher becomes the fifth Cougar to reach the Major Leagues in 2021, joining John King (Texas), Daniel Ponce de Leon (St. Louis), Austin Pruitt (Houston) and Patrick Weigel (Milwaukee). The southpaw made six appearances with Seattle a season ago.

Meanwhile, 14 Cougars appear on minor league opening day rosters including three at the triple-A level: Connor Wong (Boston; Worcester Red Sox), Kyle Dowdy (Cleveland; Columbus Clippers) and Jake Lemoine (Texas; Round Rock Express).

Four Cougars begin their seasons at double-A including Nick Hernandez and Corey Julks who open play with the Corpus Christi Hooks (Houston). Joey Pulido is a member of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto) and Jake Scheiner opens with the Arkansas Travelers (Seattle).

Connor Hollis (Tampa Bay; Bowling Green Hot Rods), Jared Triolo (Pittsburgh; Greensboro Grasshoppers) and Fred Villarreal (Seattle; Everett AquaSox) are at the high-A level while Devon Roedahl and Joe Davis are teammates with the Salem Red Sox, Boston's low-A affiliate.Â

Trey Cumbie begins play with Tampa Bay's GCL Rays and Clay Aguilar begins his professional career with New York's GCL Yankees West – both in the rookie league.
