SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – University of Houston sophomore Karen Fredgaard fired a 2-under 70 in the Second Round of the NCAA Championships on Saturday afternoon to move up 53 places into a tie for 34th at Grayhawk Golf Club.
With her sub-par total, Fredgaard set a school record for low round in NCAA Championships play. The Asserbo, Denmark, native bested the previous 18-hole low of 70, set by Leonie Harm during the First Round of the 2018 NCAA Championships at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., on May 18, 2018.
A day after shooting 77 in her opening round, Fredgaard played bogey-free golf with a pair of birdies to soar through the individual rankings.
She started her day with seven consecutive pars before making her first birdie of the day on the 158-yard, par-3 eighth hole. After a par to close out her front nine, Fredgaard opened her back nine with a birdie on the 359-yard, par-4 10th hole and then made eight straight pars to cap her day.
Stanford's Rachel Heck held the individual lead with 8-under 136 after shooting a 67 in Saturday's play. Duke's Gina Kim and Louisville's Lauren Hartlage were tied for second at 141, while UCLA's Emma Spitz stood in fourth at 142.
No. 6 Stanford held the second-day team lead at 7-under 579, four strokes ahead of No. 2 Duke. No. 3 Texas was in third at 577 with No. 9 Florida State (583), No. 4 Wake Forest (585), No. 7 Oklahoma State (586), No. 5 Mississippi (587), No. 3 LSU (588), No. 13 Oregon (590) and No. 22 Arizona (590) rounding out the Top 10.
Fredgaard earned her inaugural trip to the NCAA Championships as one of the nation's Top-10 players. Although the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional was canceled without a shot being played due to unplayable conditions from wet weather last week, Fredgaard's No. 7 ranking made her one of three student-athletes not from a qualifying team to advance to the nation's top collegiate tournament.
Fredgaard and the field will play 54 holes of stroke play with 18 holes each day. Following 54 holes, the Top-15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play Monday to determine the individual national champion.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
Fredgaard is the second Cougar student-athlete to make the program's third individual appearance at the NCAA Championships.
All-American and two-time American Athletic Conference Player of the Year Leonie Harm was the first Cougar to compete at the NCAA Championships.
The Gerlingen, Germany, native became the first Cougar to compete at the NCAA Championships after finishing seventh at the 2016 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.
Two years later, she posted a Final-Round 65 and battled through seven-hole playoff to emerge from the 2018 NCAA Austin Regional with an 11th-place finish.
