SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – University of Houston sophomore Karen Fredgaard fired a 1-under 71 during the Third Round on Sunday to continue her rise in the individual standings of the NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club.
Fredgaard completed 54 holes at the nation's top collegiate tournament with a score of 218 to stand in a tie for 16th. As one of the nine individual student-athletes not on a Top-15 team, she advanced to Sunday's Final Round, becoming the first Cougar in program history to reach that milestone.
Starting off No. 10 on the 6,384-yard course, the Asserbo, Denmark, native rallied from a bogey on her second hole – her only bogey of the day – to drain two birdies in a three-hole stretch at No. 15 and again at No. 17.
Fredgaard then capped her day with 10 straight pars to rise 18 places in the individual standings.
On Saturday, Fredgaard posted a 2-under 70 in the Second Round to set a Houston NCAA Championships record for low round.
Stanford's No. 2 Rachel Heck continued to hold the individual lead at 10-under 206. Teammate and 18th-ranked Angelina Ye stood in second at 211, while Duke's Gina Kim and Arizona State's Ashley Menne were tied for third at 213.
No. 6 Stanford stood atop the team leaderboard at 846 to stand 20 shots ahead of second-place No. 2 Duke. No. 7 Oklahoma State was in third at 868 with No. 17 Texas (870), Mississippi (875), No. 10 Arizona State (877), No. 4 Wake Forest (880), No. 8 Florida State (881), No. 22 Arizona (882) and No. 13 Oregon (883) rounded out the Top-10 leaders.
Fredgaard earned her inaugural trip to the NCAA Championships as one of the nation's Top-10 players. Although the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional was canceled without a shot being played due to unplayable conditions from wet weather, Fredgaard's No. 7 ranking made her one of three student-athletes not from a qualifying team to advance to the NCAA Championships.
