ORLANDO, Fla. – UCF pushed across two runs in the fifth inning, the only blemish against Houston starter Matt Lazzaro, as the Knights outlasted the Cougars, 2-1 in the regular-season finale Saturday afternoon from John Euliano Park.
Houston (19-32, 7-21 AAC) opens the American Baseball Championship at 3 p.m. CT Tuesday in Clearwater, Florida. The Cougars, who enter the event as the seven seed, will face No. 2-seed Tulane. The opener can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
Lazzaro's scoreless-inning streak as a starter was snapped at 12.1 innings when UCF knotted the game at one on Nick Romano's RBI-double into left center in the fifth. In 14.0 innings as a starter, Lazzaro (0-1) has allowed two runs alongside an 17-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
The southpaw struck out six batters and held the Knights to 1-for-7 (.143) with two outs and 1-for-5 (.200) with runners in scoring position. Lazzaro allowed seven hits, including just one extra-base hit, alongside one walk in 6.0 innings.
After the Knights (28-28, 18-14 AAC) loaded the bases in the sixth, Lazzaro buckled down, inducing a sky-high pop up behind the plate that was fielded by catcher Kyle Lovelace. UCF starter Kenny Serwa (3-4) allowed one run on five hits alongside six strikeouts and one walk in 7.0 innings to earn the win.
Tyler Bielamowicz's heads-up baserunning gave Houston a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Designated hitter Derrick Cherry shot a single through the right side, sending Bielamowicz to third. When the ball was held at second, Bielamowicz raced home, beating the throw at the plate.
