Cougars Drop AAC Championship Opener

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Houston starter Robert Gasser offered up another steady start but Tulane made a late push en route to a 4-1 win in the American Athletic Conference Baseball Championship opener on Tuesday evening from BayCare Ballpark.
The Cougars are forced into an elimination game Wednesday evening against the loser of No. 3-seed Wichita State and No. 6-seed USF. The contest will begin 47 minutes following the conclusion of the day's 2 p.m. CT opener and can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
With the loss, Houston falls to 19-33 while Tulane improves to 29-22. Gasser dropped to 6-6 on the season and Green Wave starter Trent Johnson moved to 3-4. Keagan Gillies earned his fifth save.
Houston outfielder Ryan Hernandez knotted the game at 1-1 with a two-out, solo home run in the seventh, before Tulane's Walker Burchfield grabbed the lead back on a solo shot in the home half. Hernandez's homer was his team-leading 11th of the season.
Gasser allowed eight hits and four runs alongside one walk and 10 strikeouts in 7.1 innings. The double-digit strikeout performance was his fifth of the season. The southpaw did not allow a run until a run-scoring sacrifice bunt from Jacob LaPrairie in the sixth.
Houston strung together its first hits of the game in the fifth inning as Hernandez lined a leadoff single into left and Will Pendergrass sent a one-out dribbler through the right side, but Johnson induced an inning-ending double play to erase the threat.
Making his fifth start, Johnson struck out six batters and held Houston to one run on four hits with one walk in 7.1 innings. Cougar reliever Ben Sears tossed 0.2 scoreless frames, stranding the bases loaded on a strikeout in the eighth inning, keeping Houston's deficit at 4-1.
