ORLANDO, Fla. – UCF struck for five runs in the first inning and its pitching staff kept Houston's bats at bay as the Knights blanked the Cougars, 6-0 in the third game of the series Friday night from John Euliano Park.
The Knights batted around in the first inning, scoring five runs on six hits while chasing Houston starter Carter Henry (2-5) from the game. After striking out six and earning the win last time out, the right-hander recorded just one out, allowing seven of eight batters to reach.
Houston pitching did not permit another hit until the seventh when catcher Josh Crouch deposited a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for a leadoff home run. The long ball was the second of the game for the Knights with Tom Josten leading off the contest with a homer.
The Cougar bullpen limited UCF to one hit and one run in 7.2 innings of work led by Ryne Huggins who tossed a career-high 3.2 innings, holding the Knights scoreless alongside one walk and one strikeout. Derrick Cherry tossed 2.0 scoreless frames, Cameron Prayer struck out three batters and Layne Looney worked a scoreless eighth inning.
The loss dropped Houston to 19-31 overall and 7-20 in American Athletic Conference play. UCF improved to 27-28 overall and 17-14 in league action.
The teams close the regular season with the four-game series finale at 3 p.m. CT Saturday. Houston has not announced a starter. UCF will throw right-hander Kenny Serwa (2-4, 6.75 ERA). The contest can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
