ORLANDO, Fla. – UCF held Houston in check offensively, spoiling a strong start from Ben Sears as the Knights outlasted Houston 2-1 in the second of two contests Thursday evening from John Euliano Park.
Shortstop Ian McMillan produced the Cougars' first hit, coming with one away in the sixth and drove in Houston's lone run with a two-out, RBI-double into left in the eighth. The latter base knock scored designated hitter Samuel Tormos who reached on a two-out single.
UCF (26-28, 16-14 AAC) jumped ahead 1-0 in the first thanks to a dribbler back to the mound that could not be fielded cleanly. The two-out miscue scored Jordan Rathbone who reached on a one-out single.
The Knights added on in the seventh, capitalizing on a leadoff walk with new Houston reliever Cameron Prayer on. Left fielder Pablo Ruiz made the Cougars (19-30, 7-19 AAC) pay, via a one-out single, pushing UCF's advantage to 2-0.
Sears (2-4) limited UCF to three hits and did not permit a hit (0-for-5) with runners aboard. The right-hander allowed one run (none earned) alongside one walk and three strikeouts. The Riverside, Rhode Island, native has tossed 5.0-plus innings in three of his last four starts.
Houston reliever Colby Casey kept Houston's deficit at two, escaping a major jam for the second straight weekend. The right-hander entered with the bases loaded in the seventh, inducing a pop out to first base and fielder's choice groundout. One inning later, the freshman stranded two.
UCF starter Zack Hunsicker did not allow a hit in 4.0 scoreless innings. The right-hander fanned four alongside one walk. Reliever Nick Vieira added 3.0 scoreless with one hit and three strikeouts.
The teams return for Game 3 on Friday at 5 p.m. CT. Houston will send right-hander Carter Henry (2-4, 6.21 ERA) to the mound against UCF righty Jack Sinclair (4-5, 5.53 ERA). The game can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
