Two-day, 54-hole addition to spring schedule begins Thursday at Whirlwind Golf Club
UPDATE (3:48 p.m., Thursday, May 20): Houston will compete with four student-athletes as a team and be eligible for the Let Them Play Classic team championship. We regret this mistake and any confusion.
CHANDLER, Ariz. – Although its season was abruptly cut short due to rainy weather at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional, the University of Houston Women's Golf program will compete in its final tournament as a group this week during Barstool Sports' Let Them Play Classic.
The two-day, 54-hole event will begins with 36 holes Thursday and continues with the final 18 holes Friday at Whirlwind Golf Club's The Cattail and Devil's Claw courses.
The NCAA Baton Rouge Regional was canceled after three straight days of rainy weather on May 10-12. Schools received a waiver from the NCAA providing an exception in the competition rules, allowing those participating schools impacted by the Regional cancellation to play in an additional season-evening event, like the LTP Classic.
Houston will compete in the LTP Classic for Assistant Coach Lydia Gumm with four student-athletes. Sophomore Karen Fredgaard – who was in the Cougars' starting lineup in Baton Rouge – will be playing in the NCAA Championships as an individual at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., with Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell, beginning Friday as well.
Fredgaard became the second Cougar to qualify for the NCAA Championships based on her individual national ranking when the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional was canceled. She joined All-American Leonie Harm in qualifying for the nation's premier collegiate event.
The Cougars earned their way into the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional as an at-large team after finishing at No. 31 in the Golfstat national rankings.
