Gasser Pedals Houston Past Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Houston starter Robert Gasser tossed another gem and Ian McMillan provided the go-ahead RBI-double in the seventh, leading the Cougars to a series-opening, 2-1 win against Memphis on Friday afternoon from FedEx Park.
McMillan's run-scoring, wall-double double was the third straight hit in the seventh for Houston (18-26, 6-15 AAC) and scored Steven Rivas, who started the rally with his second hit of the day. The loss dropped the Tigers to 14-33 overall and 4-21 in league play.
Gasser (6-5) notched his fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the season and third on the road. The southpaw fanned 10 in 7.0 innings alongside three hits, one unearned run and no walks. It marked the fourth start in which Gasser had not permitted an earned run. His three hits allowed were the fewest since April 1 at Wichita State (2).
Cougar closer Derrick Cherry locked up his fourth save. The righty tossed two scoreless, allowing one hit while striking out a pair. Memphis starter Carson Stinnett (3-5) drew the tough-luck loss, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out four alongside one walk.
Rivas, who matched a career high with three hits, put Houston ahead 1-0 with a two-out RBI-single in the fourth. The two-out RBI was his 14th of the season – six more than the closest teammate. Houston's 5-6-7 – Rivas, Will Pendergrass and McMillan – combined to go 7-for-10 with two RBIs.
Houston's defense helped its cause as Tyler Bielamowicz added a diving grab in left field as part of a 1-2-3 fifth inning and Gasser picked off his AAC-best seventh runner to end the third.
The teams return to action at 4:30 p.m. Houston right-hander Ben Sears (2-3, 5.62 ERA) will face Memphis southpaw Chris Durham (3-6, 5-84 ERA). The contest can be heard on Stretch Live with Jeremy Branham on the call.
