Hernandez crushed a two-run home run in the fifth, putting the Cougars up 6-5. Two innings later, the Tigers took back the lead, sending 11 batters to the plate while taking advantage of four hits, two walks, two hit by pitches, one wild pitch and one passed ball.
With the loss, Houston falls to 18-27 overall and 6-16 in AAC play. Memphis improves to 15-33 overall and 5-21 in league play. Houston's Maddux Miller (1-1) drew the loss, allowing three runs on two hits without recording an out.
The teams return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday. Houston right-hander Carter Henry (1-4, 6.19 ERA) will face righty Blake Wimberley (2-7, 6.40 ERA). The contest can be heard on Stretch Live with Jeremy Branham on the call.
Houston reliever Colby Casey stranded a combined five runners. The freshman entered with the bases loaded and no outs in the fourth, permitting just one to score on a sacrifice fly.
One inning later, the right-hander stranded the bases loaded, working around a single, walk and hit by pitch by inducing a fly out to left. In his longest outing of the season, Casey tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out another.
Rivas jumpstarted the scoring in the first, drilling a two-out triple into right field. The junior's first triple of the season plated Brad Burckel (walk) and Hernandez (single). In the fourth, he walloped a solo homer off the scoreboard in right, trimming Houston's deficit to 4-3.
Dylan Post contributed an RBI-double in the fourth, tying the game at four. Skyler Trevino collected his first collegiate hit in the sixth, driving a one-out double into left field. Tyler Bielamowicz robbed Taylor Howell of a home run, perfectly timing his jump for the third out of the sixth.
Houston starter Ben Sears allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits while walking five and striking out four in 3.0 innings. Memphis starter Chris Durham allowed nine hits and six runs while walking one and striking out three in 4.1 innings.
