HOUSTON – University of Houston senior Luke Long fired a 6-under 66 in the Second Round of the Bayou City Collegiate Classic and finished the first day of play at 7-under 137 to tie for third on Monday evening.
Starting the afternoon session off No. 3 on the 7,184-yard, par-72 course at Westwood Golf Club, Long overcame a bogey on his first hole with four straight birdies. He endured another bogey on No. 8, but it would be his final one for the day. The Fayetteville, Ark., native drained birdies on No. 10 and No. 12 and capped his day with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 1-2.
Long started his day with a 71 in the First Round, thanks to four birdies. He joined Louisiana's Peter Hinnant at 137 and trailed only first-day leaders William Holcomb (Sam Houston State) and Enrique Dimayuga (Florida Atlantic) by a stroke entering the Final Round.
As a team, the Cougars posted back-to-back sub-par rounds and stood in third at 14-under 562. After recording a 285 in the morning, Houston bettered that score by eight strokes for the afternoon's second-best team total.
Senior Alexander Frances enjoyed two rounds of par or better, including a 70 in the First Round, and was tied for 13th at 142. Junior Braxton Watkins overcame a 73 in the morning with a 70 in the Second Round and was tied for 17th at 143.
Senior Matt Cole fired a 69 in the Second Round and was tied for 25th at 144. The Fayetteville, Ark., native drained five birdies in the afternoon, including four in his final eight holes. Sophomore Austyn Reily joined Cole at 144 after shooting a 71 in the First Round.
Senior Logan Young was tied for 35th at 145, which included a 71 in the afternoon.
Playing as an individual, freshman Hanseung Chang was tied for 41st at 146 after posting a 70 in the Second Round. Sophomore Trip Morris was tied for 41st at 146, while senior Andrew Ribson was tied for 52nd at 148.
Sam Houston State held the first-day lead at 556, while Florida Atlantic stood in second at 560. Louisiana (564), No. 26 UTSA (574), No. 42 Arkansas State (577), Rice (581), North Texas (583), Texas State (585) and Abilene Christian (585) rounded out the Top 10.
Teams will play the Final Round, beginning with split-tee starts at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday.

PAIRINGS
For Tuesday's Final Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Louisiana, beginning at 8:20 a.m., off No. 1.
Cole and Reily start their day at 8:20 a.m., with Frances and Watkins (8:30 a.m.) and Long (8:40 a.m.) to follow.
Young (9:10 a.m.), Morris (9:20 a.m.) and Gibson and Chang (9:30 a.m.) will start the Final Round off No. 10.

Following the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at Westwood Golf Club in Houston, the Cougars close the regular season at the Aggie Invitational at Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas on April 9-11.
From there, Houston takes its first step in the postseason when it tees off at the American Athletic Conference Championships at Southern Hills Plantation in Brooksville, Fla., on April 23-25. The winner of the league's annual postseason event receives the automatic bid to NCAA Regional play.
