Houston dropped its opening AAC series, 3-1, falling in three one-run games … Cougar pitching posted a 2.50 ERA, with all four starters tossing 7.0-plus innings … Houston held Wichita State to a .206 batting average … Houston starter Robert Gasser struck out a career-high 12 batters, leading the Cougars to a 5-3 win over Wichita State in the American Athletic Conference opener on Thursday night …Gasser did not allow a run in 7.2 innings, permitting just two hits alongside three walks and 12 strikeouts … despite an impressive showing from Houston starter Carter Henry, the Cougars were undone by a ninth-inning home run, falling 3-2 to Wichita State in the first of two games Friday afternoon … in his first start since 2017, Henry pitched a career high 8.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five … Houston could not connect on the timely hit, dropping the doubleheader finale, 2-1 to Wichita State on Friday night … Houston starter Jaycob Deese tossed a career-high 7.2 innings, working around eight hits to allow just two runs … offensively, the Cougars were led by Dylan Post and Ryan Hernandez who finished with two hits apiece … Wichita State capitalized on Houston miscues, pushing across a two-out ninth inning run to slip past the Cougars, 3-2 in the four-game series finale … Will Pendergrass provided Houston a 2-0 advantage in the second, clubbing a two-run home run 364 feet over the left field wall … the Cougars continue their stretch of eight consecutive against Wichita State, opening a four-game road series at 1 p.m. Friday.
