Cougars fall to Knights 4-0 on Saturday in Orlando

ORLANDO – The Houston Tennis team's conference tournament run comes to an end in the semifinals as it fell to No.8 UCF 4-0 on Saturday morning at the UTSA National Campus in Orlando.

Houston (15-8, 4-3 AAC) advanced to the semifinals after defeating Tulane on Saturday while UCF (17-4, 5-0 AAC) toped USF. With the loss, the Knights now lead the all-time series 3-2 over the Cougars.

After the two team's split 6-0 results, the doubles point came down to the second spot with Belgium natives Phonexay Chitdara and Sophie Gerits representing Houston. Chitdara and Gerits rallied from an early deficit, but ultimately fell 6-3.

The Cougars struggled to stop the Knights in singles action with their nationally ranked foes taking five of the six first sets. Chitdara was the only Cougar to win their first set in singles play.

First to finish was Blanca Cortijo Parreno in the six-spot falling 6-1, 6-3. That was followed soon after by Gerits dropping her match 6-3, 6-2.

After clawing back from a deficit in the top spot, Mimi Kendall-Woseley forced a third set against No.19 Valeriya Zeleva. Zeleva grabbed the momentum in the third set and never looked back as her victory over Kendall-Woseley ended the team's day.

Azul Pedemonti also forced a third set after losing the first and was leading 2-1 before remaining unfinished. Laura Slisane was sitting at 6-5 in the second set to force a third set against No.30 Rebeka Stolmar when play was ended.
