Houston tops Tulane 4-2 in AAC Quarterfinals

ORLANDO – The Houston Tennis team earned the program's fourth berth to the AAC Championship Semifinals after defeating Tulane 4-2 on Friday afternoon at the UTSA National Campus in Orlando.

Houston (15-7, 4-2 AAC) had previously defeated Tulane (13-9, 2-4 AAC) on March 19 in New Orleans. The Cougars will now face No.8 UCF on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT after the Knights defeated USF on Friday afternoon.

With the victory, the program is now 7-6 all-time at the AAC Championships and it's the first win under Head Coach Helena Besovic. The program twice reached the conference finals back in 2014 and 2015.

After dropping the doubles point, the Cougars charged back with singles success. In the second singles spot, Laura Slisane dominated her foe 6-0, 6-1 to knot the team score at one apiece. Fellow freshman Blanca Cortijo Parreno then provided the Cougars a 2-1 lead with her 6-3, 6-1 victory in the sixth spot.

Sophie Gerits then won 6-4, 6-3 soon after to put the squad on the brink of victory. Before the Cougars could close it out, Phonexay Chitdara fell to Adelaide Lavery and the match was down to a pair of third set battles for Mimi Kendall-Woseley and Azul Pedemonti.

Just after the team's meeting had elapsed three hours, Azul Pedemonti put an end to the match. Pedemonti's forehand forced her opponent into an error at the net and she earned herself a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win while clinching the Cougars victory.

Kendall-Woseley's match would remain unfinished.
