HOUSTON – Despite an impressive showing from Houston starter Carter Henry, the Cougars were undone by a ninth-inning home run, falling 3-2 to Wichita State in the first of two games Friday afternoon from Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
The Cougars (13-12, 1-1 AAC) scored their lone runs in the first two innings highlighted by a Brandon Uhse (1-for-3) home run — his third of the season— and Will Pendergrass' (1-for-3) run from third on a wild pitch.
In his first start since 2017, Henry (0-1) pitched a career high 8.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five. The senior did not allow a run over the four consecutive before Wichita State third baseman Paxton Wallace delivered the go-ahead homer in the ninth.
Wichita State (13-9, 1-1 AAC) was led by Wallace (2-for-3) who finished with two runs and as many RBIs. Reliever Aaron Haase locked up his sixth save, stranding the tying run at second base in the ninth inning.
The teams resume doubleheader action with the second contest set for 5:15 p.m. The contest can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
